CC Sabathia, his wife Amber, and the PitCCh In Foundation hosted a reception Friday night, in preparation for their fourth annual CC Challenge. The yearly scavenger hunt will take place Saturday, with proceeds benefiting Sabathia’s foundation which raises money for inner city youth.
The Sabathias, whose presence in the community has stretched from coast – they both have roots in northern California – to coast since they began their foundation eight years ago, now hosts year-round events in the New York City area. In addition to the more conventional celebrity tournaments and community giveaways, the couple, who are both avid fans of the reality game show The Amazing Race wanted this particular initiative to stick out.
“It’s something different to do, besides a golf tournament or something like that,” said CC. “It’s kind of off the beaten path, so to have people come out supporting and happy to be a part of it – that’s really cool.”
Representatives from each team took photos throughout the night and mingled with the Sabathias, and per tradition the event served as the official rules party. Instructions for the race were announced, for example: racers must stick together with their team at all times and must only travel on foot.
“Last year it was Goldman Sachs who won it,” Amber said of the 2013 CC Challenge. “We’re seeing the tradition that bankers are winning, so it’s really mind over matter… the key is to get someone really smart on your team.”
Throughout the race, teams consisting of four to five participants will navigate New York’s Central Park looking for clues, with the winning team receiving the CC Cup.
“We wanted something that people can actually get out and be involved,” said Amber. “The great thing is that all this money that we’re raising is going to a great cause; it’s going back to the inner cities, it’s promoting self-esteem, and we’re really making a difference.”
“It’s just kinda in our DNA,” said CC. “I grew up in the Bay area and had a lot of different programs help me get to where I’m at, so I think it’s important for me to give back to the kids.”
Next up, CC is heading to the West Coast for his upcoming All-Star Baseball Clinic, in partnership with the North Vallejo Little League in Vallejo, CA. It is expected to take place in January.
Congrats to the winners!
